Sick Days.

Yesterday was a sick day.

Scarlett woke up at 11 pm that night, crying out for me in that, I don't feel good, I need my Mama cry. On nights that Scarlett is sick, she doesn't sleep. We usually let her lay in the bed with us and I rub her back and snuggle her. Usually, she sleeps on my chest for hour increments. I really don't mind these sleepless nights. Of course I'm tired and can barely keep my eyes open but she needs me and the fact that my presence comforts her is the best feeling ever. Not to mention, Scarlett has never been a good sleeper. From the day she was born, she would wake up every 2 hours. By 6 months old, she only slept 3 or 4 hours at a time and that lasted up until about her first birthday. After that, she woke up once or twice a night and that has been how it stayed up until now. Needless to say, I am used to not sleeping or interrupted sleep. My body has gotten used to it. I accepted the fact that she wasn't going to be a good sleeper no matter what I tried. And we tried it all!

Scarlett has been sick 3 or 4 times since she's started preschool just over a month and and a half ago. Not just a cold type of sickness. But a fever, coughing, bronchilitis, nebulizer, ear infection type of sickness. After seeing the doctor today, we were bummed to find out that she has croup and another double ear infection. :(

This means that her ear infection tally for the last 6 months is large enough that they are sending her to a specialist to see if she needs tubes for her ears. I am not thrilled about this. I know that it is better than the alternative, countless ear infections and antibiotics every other month, But somehow the thought of having her put under for this procedure is giving me heart palpitations….. I don't know a lot about it. I guess that's why we are going to meet with him. Until then, we don't know much about it.

When I was younger, I remember the best thing about being sick was staying home with my mother and eating jello, snuggling on the couch watching movies and being pampered. This is exactly what I did with Scarlett these last two days. I snuggled her and pampered her. I made her strawberry jello and we watched movies all day in between her naps. I hated to call out of work on my fourth day but I guess that is what being a mother is all about.

The best part of my day was when Scarlett, with her stuffed nose, horrible cough and all, came up to me, climbed onto me, hugged me and said, "I love you, Mama."

  2. Poor little Scarlet, it's always so sad when that happens right? About the tubes, don't worry, our daughter was 6 months when she got them (necessary because of problems with a cleft palate) and while it was tough to see her like that, I guess it was harder for us to experience than her. The procedure lasted about 15 minutes and by the afternoon it was like she never had been in the hospital.

In our hospital they let you stay with them when they are put to sleep and that's still so sad, had to experience that two times and that still is the hardest part. But afterwards it was a big improvement for her little ears and no more infections that winter, hooray for that! Wishing you girls lots of luck and hope she feels better soon!
