Hair

I've had a few people ask me about my hair. What I use for hair products, how I style it etc. I know I covered this a bit in a questionnaire I did, but I'm going to break it down a bit more here.

First off, hair types matter. I have thick full hair that gets wavy in the humidity and straight if I let it dry straight. What goes for my hair, might not work with your hair. You may have to vary things a bit.

I only wash my hair every 3 days. I didn't say I only shower every 3 days. I said I only wash my hair every 3 days. So that means I only run water through my hair on the other days or keep it up and dry. If you have greasy hair, I wouldn't suggest that. But, if you have normal to thick hair, it is great for your hair.

I always brush the snarls out of my hair before I get in the shower. Wet hair is fragile and breaks easy if you brush it after. When I do shampoo my hair, I only shampoo the roots. I massage the shampoo into my scalp leaving my ends alone. The roots tend to be greasy and the ends, dry. When I rinse my hair, the shampoo passes through my ends and cleans them but there is no abrasive rubbing. Makes sense right? For conditioning, I do the opposite. I only put conditioner in the lower half of my hair. This is especially smart if you have an oily scalp.  Every other week, I do a Hair  Mayonnaise treatment. You can buy it at a local Sally's or Target. It's inexpensive and it really works to make your hair shiny and healthy looking.

I don't worry too much about particular "kinds" of shampoos and conditioners. They all have the same ingredients in them, they just label them "For Fine Hair" or "For Damaged Hair".  I've used many shampoos, some for fine hair or some for dry hair, they all work similar. My favorite shampoos are: Tresemme & Aussie

That's right, I don't buy really expensive shampoo. It's only in your hair for 2 minutes. Conditioner, I do tend to spend a little more on. My all time favorite hair line is Big Sexy Hair products. I bought Straight Sexy Hair Conditioner. It smoothes my hair out so it's not frizzy but it still curls when I use my curling iron. I also like Biolage, Nexxus or Coconut Milk.

Drying. 9 out of 10 times, I let my hair air dry. Blow drying damages mine. I'm sure it's not that good for any hair type. So if you have time, air dry it.

For styling, I tend to do whatever is easiest. Since I have a baby now, easy is a must. My hair is pretty versatile so it may not work for your hair. But give my Easy/Messy hair styling a try:
Towel Dry Hair. When hair is half way dry, take gel, or as I use,  Aussie Sprunch Spray, and use it on your hair by scrunching your hair up with your hands. Let it dry completely and then curl a few random strands all around the top with a 1/2 inch barrel curling iron. It will give it a messy, but sexy look.

Sometimes I just let it air dry straight. Other days, I curl every piece of hair with a 1 1/2 inch curling iron and then separate curls with fingers. I usually pull the curling iron down when releasing hair. It gives it a subtle look. I found a great tutorial that shows exactly how I do my hair on this blog. Kate has great style and we do our hair the same way. Find it HERE.

I hope this is helpful. The best thing to do is play around with your hair. Do it a different way each day. You will find a way that works for your individual hair type.

TIP: Just because something works for one person, doesn't mean it will work for you. I have tried a few things with my hair that I have seen in magazines or online and it just doesn't work for me. So, I vary things to my own liking.
